ASIA receives diabetes prevention grant from the Ohio Commission on Minority Health

October 13th, 2009

Akron/Cleveland, Ohio – Asian Services In Action (ASIA) is pleased to announce that it has received a two-year grant from the Ohio Commission on Minority Health to address Type 2 diabetes prevention, education, outreach and support program. The first year award of $74,772 (renewable for the second year) is for ASIA’s Health and Activities Promotion Initiative (HAPI).

The Health and Activities Promotion Initiative (HAPI) is a linguistically appropriate and culturally relevant Asian American diabetes prevention, education, outreach and support program. The goals of HAPI are:
1. To prevent the onset of Type 2 diabetes among high-risk Asian American ethnic groups and the broader Asian American community,

2. To support active living, healthy eating, and greater diabetes knowledge among those who are pre-diabetic or at-risk for Type 2 diabetes,

3. Lastly, to increase the cultural competency of providers so they can better take care of their Asian American patients.

According to a recent report, the fastest growing cases of diabetes are among Asian and Latino adults. Nationally, it is the 5th leading cause of death among Asian American and Pacific Islanders – AAPIs (compared to 7th among all Americans). In northeastern Ohio, it is estimated that nearly 3,000 AAPIs are living with diabetes. Within the AAPI community, diabetes cases are highest among Asian Indian, Filipino, Korean and Southeast Asian populations. Each of these communities has unique socio-economic, historical, cultural, and linguistic factors that attribute to their higher risk for diabetes.

“As our immigrant and refugee communities become more acculturated to American life, specifically to western eating habits and lifestyle, they are fast becoming part of the health crisis that is affecting many Americans. Through this program, we hope to delay or prevent Type 2 diabetes among Asian Americans in northeastern Ohio,” said Michael Byun, ASIA Executive Director.

The Health and Activities Promotion Initiative is funded by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health.

ASIA receives REACH US PATH for Women CEED Grant to address breast and cervical cancer among SE Asian women

October 13th, 2009

Cleveland, Ohio – Asian Services In Action was awarded a grant from The Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community Alliance (OCAPICA) to increase breast and cervical cancer screenings for Cambodian, Laotian and Vietnamese women in northeastern Ohio.

The Asian-American Women Empowered (AWE) project will:
• Build capacity in each targeted community by training key women, who will serve as natural helpers and will be the source of information about breast and cervical health for other women;
• Increase awareness of and engagement with key underserved Asian ethnic communities;
• Engage and heighten awareness among funders, policymakers, and providers to reduce barriers to breast and cervical screenings for Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese women.

The project will serve over 230 women in the next 12 months, with assistance to access low-cost or free screenings, education and outreach.

“This national level funding will certainly prove to be a catalyst for systems change at the local and regional levels to improve access for Asian women who face language and cultural barriers when it comes to valuable breast and cervical cancer screenings,” said Michael Byun, ASIA Executive Director.

The issues of breast/cervical cancers are great:
• Asian American women have the third highest incidence of cervical cancer, higher than Whites and similar to Blacks (National Cancer Institute, 2001); one alarming report found that only 28% of women from one Asian ethnic group surveyed had heard of a Pap test (Kim et al., 1999).
• Cambodian, Laotian, and Vietnamese are considered poorer, less educated, and more isolated than other Asian ethnic groups such as Korean, Filipino, Asian Indian, and Chinese (including Taiwanese).
• 39% of the Asian American population are limited English proficient (LEP) compared to 8% of the total population; over 50% Vietnamese, Hmong, Cambodian, Laotian, Taiwanese, Korean, Bangladeshi, and Chinese Americans in our region spoke less then “very well” English (U.S. Census, 2000).
