Community
Adult Mentoring Project (CAM)
Funded by the Alcohol and Drug Addiction Services Board of
Cleveland, the Community Adult Mentoring Program is a substance
abuse prevention program for youth in grades K through 7. This
program provides peer and adult mentoring to Asian/Pacific Islander
children in Cuyahoga County. Activities include tutoring and
homework assistance, prevention education, problem identification
and referral services, and other alternative activities. The
program runs throughout the school year, with a summer camp
component. For more information, please contact Kitty Leung at
216-881-0330 (ext. 102) or
kitty.leung@asiainc-ohio.org.
Group mentoring
is an alternative to traditional one-to-one mentoring that is a
cultural fit for our customers needs.
After
School Program

Activities
include:
- After school
tutoring/prevention education reaches out to school-age customers
enrolled in grades K-7.
- The academic
tutorial program uses an infused or integrated curriculum
that combines prevention education with academic, athletic, and
real life education. This method recognizes and uses participants
cultural heritages to inform and enhance their learning experiences.
e.g. the use of language arts to write a short play or
skit that would help them understand the risks of ATOD use, using
art forms to determine the level of understanding of ATODs
harmful effects on the body, or using science to understand the
effects of smoking on lungs.
- As an after
school drop in center, CAM uses alternative strategies to redress
the research-based assertion that the risks of use of tobacco
and alcohol sharply increases when youth are not involved with
supervised after school activities.
- CAM is also
responsive to the needs of its customers who are Low English Proficient
where there exists a direct relationship between scholastic performance
and high risk behavior.
- The program
is held four days a week for 2.5 hours each meeting during the
nine-month school year.
Group
Mentoring
- Mentoring
activities are structured to engage Asian teens to focus on ATOD
use prevention, specifically tobacco use, with all of its ramifications
- health promotion, leadership training, team building and a closer
bonding between mentor and mentees.
Outcomes:
- Increased
protective assets
- Increased
refusal skills
- Improved
social skills
- Improved
conflict resolution and anger management skills
- Decreased
intergenerational conflicts
