Teen Creations

Teen Creations
provides services to immigrant and refugee populations from the
Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hispanic, Hmong, Lao, Liberian, Serbo-Croatian,
Thai and Vietnamese communities in Summit County.
Teen Creations receives its
funding
from the Welty
Family Foundation.
Youth from emerging
populations face difficult challenges and barriers to employment
that have often been overlooked by mainstream society. These include
limited English proficiency; a high risk of use of alcohol, tobacco
and other drugs; increased gang involvement; truancy; poverty; post-traumatic
stress; and in some communities, a high prevalence of teenage pregnancy.
Many face the added barrier of discrimination stemming from the
lack of understanding by mainstream employers of their native cultures
and social mores.
The Teen Creations program
is designed to help youth to envision their future goals, whether
they are post-secondary education or entering the workforce, and
to take the steps necessary to achieve these goals.
Youth in Teen Creation start their own
company and learn the fundamental skills
necessary to run a successful business. Student gain practical
skills in the areas of money management, marketing, interpersonal
communication, public speaking, product innovation and planning,
which will carry through high school and beyond.
